Building links properly is perhaps one of the most elusive skills for SEO. It requires serious commitment, hard work, creativity, craftiness, resourcefulness, lots of tools, persistence, and the perfect balance between science and art. Much of the SEO world is bracing themselves for an imminent update to Penguin, Which Matt Cutts Just Announced is Live….Penguin is a webspam algorithm and is an over-optimization formula that among others things takes a bite out of black hat linkbuilding tactics. The big black hat tactic out there, the one some have been doing is buying links. The big tactic that Google has promised to attack is paid advertorials that pass pagerank. Google's terms of service require using a No Follow tag to label advertising links to make sure they don't influence organic results. Google has also anounced they took down a paid link network and are clearly getting better at detecting paid links that previously have been undetetable. So, How can you build links that Google will Love you for? The simple answer is to earn links through various tactics of developing relationships, and creating linkable assets. So, What's the only linkbuilding post you'll ever need? There is an excellent list of pretty much everyContinue Reading »

I was running a search for a brand I am researching and chanced upon an adwords ad extension click to chat. Pretty cool. I don't know how useful it is, but definitely cool. It grabs the eye and gives the impression that you are instantly available to help them. I would love to test it, but it seems to be in a private Beta right now. What do you think about it?

Every once in a while I come across a really clever link acquisition strategy, and today there is an excellent discussion about it. The strategy is simple. Create an easter egg in your website source code that is really clever and creative and cool looking, and it will likely generate lots of links from popular sites. There is an excellent discussion on Hacker News about this today, since a tutoring website surfaced with a picture of Paul Graham, the creator of Hacker News hidden in the source code of their programming tutors page. According the to the website, they hid famous people from different categories in the source code for that category page. This is a really clever way to generate industry relevant links. If you go to this page, and look at the source code you will see it. www.tutorspree.com/browse/new-york-ny-tutors/computer-programming (its too big to take a screen shot.) It turns out, many other websites use their source code like this including Barack Obama. As you can see, they hid his logo in there. There are other websites that use Easter Eggs in their source code to attract top talent. Like Seomoz.org, zappos.com, and vimeo.com Some of it requires breaking openContinue Reading »

One of the most common questions I get asked is, "Do Testimonials Really Work?!" These questions are common because on the internet we know how easy it is to fake a testimonial. The answer of course is a RESOUNDING YES!!! Sure, testimonials that have obvious trust issues, or don't share real insight, are probably worthless, but legit testimonials work wonders. In fact, since so few companies do testimonials properly online, they present a HUGE opportunity to differentiate yourself as a trusted vendor. I recently came across an example a Testimonials that I absolutely believed without blinking an eye. It is a brilliant example of testimonials done right. Let's first understand though the function that a testimonials is supposed to serve so we can figure out what type actually works. When a customer is ready to buy, they have an immediate fear of being made to look like a fool. What this means is that a Testimonial is not so much meant to make people trust you but more to… The Function of a Testimonial is to Assure People They Won't Look Like A Fool By Trusting You. There is a subtle but fundamental difference between this Assurance, and actually provingContinue Reading »

One of the most common questions I get asked about SEO is how long it will take to start seeing results. I love this question because it is one of the few areas that most SEO's underestimate, and a huge opportunity for me to swoop in and save the day. In fact, I was reviewing an SEO contract for a friend from a vendor and they wanted him to sign a Two Year Contract for SEO. I don't care how good a company is at SEO, signing a two year contract is a mistake. There are too many things that can change or go wrong and you'll be stuck holding the bag. What was really crazy about that contract was their money back guarantee if after two years you don't at least double your investment with them, you'll get your money back. This is crazy because not only is search volume and internet usage going up, your sites age influence your rankings to a relatively significant degree. Assuming you are not doing anything spammy, and are creating good content, odds are over two years you will certainly grow organically, definitely enough to recoup the cost of the two year contract.Continue Reading »

I remember when I created my parent company name Customer Hunter, and how proud I was for coming up with the name. I still like it a ton, but every time I speak to people and I say the name of my company on the phone, they ask me to repeat it atleast twice. Apparently, there is something about the name that doesn’t translate well when spoken. What a shame, cuz I fell in love with the name. Even my brand Tenfold Traffic, which works much better still translates poorly when spoken, mostly because the D at the end of tenfold and the T at the beggining of traffic get smudged together. It always amazes me how much ego plays a role in business decisions and how they can cause untold damage. However, it is especially frustrating when I see a big brand make a huge mistake driven by executive pride, in something as important as branding decisions, especially when the damage may be more in lost potential than a quantifiable loss. Choosing the name of your brand is very important, and while the fix is as easy as changing it, the damage can be a complete non-starter for aContinue Reading »

Joe was rowing his boat out in the middle of a lake for a relaxing day of fishing. A huge green snake comes up alongside the boat with a half-swallowed frog sticking out of it’s mouth. Feeling bad for the frog, Joe used his paddle to hit the snake, releasing the frog to safety. Joe felt really good about saving the frog, but started feeling bad that he deprived the snake of his lunch, so he looked around his boat for something to feed the snake with. All he had was a bottle of bourbon, so he gave the snake a nice big swig and the snake swam away happy. Three minutes later, the snake returned…with two frogs in it’s mouth. When you watch shark tank, Mr. Wonderful always talks about sending out his dollars to the school yard hoping they come back with friends. There is no reason why Your Customers Shouldn’t be going out and bringing more customers back to you. In fact, most businesses rely pretty heavily on getting customer referrals. Getting press coverage for your company is pretty much the holy grail in an entrepreneurs mind. The fantasy of being famous, being recognized for your contribution, and profiting handsomely from it, makes PR firms who basically just email a bunch a journalists a boatload of cash from a truckload of clients. The sales pitch promises exposure to millions of eyeballs, the equivalent of millions of dollars in advertising all for the low fee of $5k a month. However, If You Are Like Most Small Business Owners, You Can’t Afford to Drop $5,000 a Month on a PR Firm. In fact, you might not even have the budgets to spend that much money on advertising. Still, the desire to be recognized by the media, to BE DISCOVERED and APPRECIATED is a universal desire shared by most companies. From an SEO perspective, getting links from high value media outlets certainly have lots of value in establishing your credibility in Search Engines. After all, if a journalist who is bound by integrity and scrutiny of millions of readers feels you are worth writing about, odds are your company is legit and worth showing in search results. If you are like most of America, you are probably stumped by why Lazaro Arbos is still surviving on American Idol. For weeks now he has under-performed the competition, and all the judges and Jimmy Iovine want him gone, gone, gone. If you recall, I wrote a post before the live competition started with a theory of why Lazaro might just Win American Idol this year. While he is certainly not my favorite anymore, I can still see him winning, and if not I certainly think he has a few weeks left of success on the show. Here’s why… Every Time The Judges Criticize and Talk Down To Lazaro, They Reinforce America’s Belief in Lazaro and What He Stands For… You see, most of us aren’t the absolute very best at anything. Running successful banner ad campaigns or “Display” campaigns are a really big challenge for many marketers. For the most part, this ad inventory is used for branding advertising which doesn’t show a direct response measurement and is therefore too cost prohibitive for your average small advertiser. I get asked all the time how to run successful banner ads. The secret lies in big data and programmatic advertising. Big data and Programmatic marketing is the big buzz words for the last year and things are starting to get crazy. The simple explanation is every interaction you have with a website is a datapoint that can help a marketer target you with more relevant offers. The most classic example everyone is aware of is site retargeting, where you buy display advertising in Real Time targeting visitors who recently visited your website. What many people don’t realize is that you can target datapoints and interactions that happen off your site, on other websites. For example, if someone searches in Google for “Digital camera reviews” and clicks on a link to ConsumerReports.com, you can retarget that person through a company like Chango. This is called Search Display Retargeting and works almost as well asContinue Reading »

Disney screwed the pooch this time…. But, if they lived up to their reputation, they might just turn a low level mistake into a True Princess Miracle. As you can see in the image above, the first painting was painted by Katie Woodger, herein referred to as small gal, was clearly knocked off by Disney, herein referred to as Big Guy. This painting by Katie is actually quite popular and claims the reputation of being tattooed on 9 different people and over 2030 notes on Tumblr. Katie feels violated, outraged, and helpless as she cries for help on her blog. After all, how can a simple artist go up against one of the largest companies in the world? While my guess is that this was a low level lazy employee who knocked it off, obviously Disney needs to take responsibility and is certainly liable. Here is a screenshot of the Disney product that knocked off the design. I was a deprived child, never got to visit any Disney lands, or worlds, or whatnot. “Kids, get in the car, we are going to the Ice Cream shop.” Dad proclaimed to his smiling family. Little did they know that they were on the way to the dentist. This car commercial was probably very funny, but I can’ t remember it because I was barely six years old. More importantly though, that commercial set the tone for my Father banning me from watching television commercials because they teach people to lie. From that moment on, I decided I wanted to make a career writing television commercials. It wasn’t that I wanted to lie and get away with it, it was because I wanted to be able to write something so influential it could get someone like my father to actually make a rule for his kids. Of course it didn’t hurt that everyone loved talking about hilarious commercials on TV, and how cool it seemed to me be able to say, “I write commercials for a living.” Still, this was a big challenge. Is your website telling Google to ignore you? It might be if you make changes to your website without consulting a Technical SEO expert. You see, beyond the wonderful world of optimizing content and attracting links, there is a hidden layer called software. That’s right, very complex code is what makes search engines and your website function. Sometimes they don’t play nicely together without you even realizing something is wrong. Craigslist made a simple and innocent change to their website, that 9/10 web developers wouldn’t have any idea could have affected their search rankings. In fact, 9/10 SEO’s wouldn’t have realized either. But…It had massive ramifications. Basically, this innocent changes caused Google to delete Craigslist from their search results every midnight. This wasn’t a bug in Craigslist or Google, this was simply a software engineer not realizing how Google interprets their instructions to Search bots…or Google trying to solve a problem, but not anticipating this possible site change. SearchTempest, a Craigslist search engine first discovered this. From the post it seems that SearchTempest is powered by Google custom search, and since Google was deleting craigslist everynight, their Craigslist tool stopped functioning properly, so they switched to Bing’s tool and wrote aContinue Reading »

Twitter rolled out their advanced advertising interface to small businesses today. Enabling advertisers to target by device, gender, and similar audiences. In a post about New Powerful Advertising Tools on Twitter’s advertising blog they explain in more detail. Our self-service advertisers can now target interests in two specific ways. First, they can target users with the same interests as followers of @usernames. For example, if a golf pro shop were promoting itself, it might target users who are similar to those who follow @GolfDigestMag, @GolfChannel or even a former professional golfer like Annika Sorenstam (@ANNIKA59). They can also choose from a wide-ranging list of over 350 interest categories—from auto racing to birdwatching (or in this case, golf). By targeting people’s interests, advertisers can tailor their messages to reach those most likely to engage with them. In addition to these interest targeting options, self-service advertisers can now specify the exact devices and platforms to have Promoted Tweets display. This means a game developer can choose to target Android devices with campaigns to download Android-specific apps with their campaign, and Apple devices to drive them to the App Store. We’ve also added the ability to target by gender (which we extrapolate using public userContinue Reading »

Last Month Twitter and Amex announced Amex Sync With Twitter, which lets you connect your Amex Card with your twitter account, and buy thinks by tweeting special hashtags. Twitters hope with this is to bring an additional revenue stream to their business. I think it could become so much more. You can already grab great deals by tweeting at special hashtags by following this @americanexpress . The holy grail in product placement ads is the ability to watch a show where Tiger Woods uses a specific golf ball, press a button on your remote, and the next day next a box of a dozen of those same golf balls in the mail. Infomercials and Shows like HSN and QVC clearly demonstrate that television is a great media for selling products direct to consumers. Right now the only ways to buy are to call or go to their website. Have you ever noticed when you scroll towards the bottom of your favorite news or entertainment website there is a section called, “From Around The Web” that showcases several curated stories? Well, those are advertisements typically placed by the content promotion advertising network Outbrain.com . This is a great example of Native Advertising. What that means is that the advertisements are actually the atomic unit of consumption on that site. In simpler terms, The ads are the same as the content, and you engage the ads the same way you engage the site. This is the latest evolution in advertising, and is creating an entire ecosystem of really unique ad formats. It creates great opportunities to make your ad dollars go much further. The main reason this works so well is that it doesn’t require “Disrupting” the user, but rather fits into their current frame of mind, making it more natural and much simpler to engage the ad. I hope to write many posts about all the different kinds of native ads on the internet and experiment with advertising on them. Outbrain lets you optimize very few features. Some businesses find customers to make sales. Smart businesses make sales to find customers. Most marketers focus on finding new customers, when they can probably make much more money increasing their average ticket and finding ways to maximize the value of each customer. I personally wont work with a company that doesn’t focus on maximizing the lifetime value of a customer, because the best marketing in the world wont compensate for a terrible customer experience. There Is No Question or Doubt About It… Optimizing Your Customers Experience Offers The BIGGEST Returns on your marketing dollars. Period! How can you make sure to deliver the best service possible? You can start by taking the time to really think about the following questions and finding ways to really answer them as best as possible. 1. What Would DELIGHT your customers? 2. What would be fun for them? 3. How could you surprise them? 4. What would make them feel unique and special? 5. What would make them feel good about themselves? 6. Google has been rolling out some pretty big features in Adwords over the last week or so. They quietly rolled out Google Offers, available to accounts that upgraded to Enhanced campaigns, enabling advertisers to run their own deals, much like a Groupon Deal and track its effectiveness right in their adwords account. There is an interesting article on Search Engine Land that postulates this could be a Groupon Killer. Personally, I don’t think it will even compete with the Daily Deal space, but will offer some great opportunities for advertisers. The two big advantages that get me excited are… 1. The opportunity to get more valuable real estate in the Search Results, as well as a Big Bold Button, which can drive increased Click Through Rates, which of course influences Quality Score, can make a big difference for advertisers. I Know that ad extensions are one of my favorite features in adwords, and the ability to get more ad space, along with a more prominent call to action, can not only lend itself to great opportunities, but can free up copy to promote more benefits instead of using a call to action in your ad copy.Continue Reading »

It’s 2013, like most marketers, you probably already have a mobile and tablet marketing plan in place. You probably at least have a mobile website, if not a responsive design. Unfortunately, that is just not enough in today’s age. Google did a study that revealed 67% of consumers start shopping on a mobile phone and continue shopping on other devices. We are clearly living in a multi-screen world, with most people having four screens they move between. A TV, a SmartPhone, a Tablet, and a Laptop. Understanding the context of how consumers look for information, shop and behave across these devices is still in it’s infancy, but the real question is how do you optimize your user experience as they move between devices. This of course presents all sorts of interesting challenges, starting with, how do you make sure your users can save their shopping trip from one device to another? Signing in is one option. There are also services that help you tie multiple devices to the same user. I am sure there are many other options i have to discover, as this is relatively new. The holy grail of all marketing and advertising is scaling one on one communication. The facts on the ground though are that each and every consumer is slightly different, and as much as we have been able to personalize advertising so far, we have a long way to go. In the meantime though, it is crucially important to recognize that Effective Marketing Requires Joining the Conversation Playing Out In Your Prospects Head. Which of course requires understanding the context and intent of your prospect. As you can imagine, someone searching on a smart phone for local pizza probably wants a click to call ad, while someone searching on a desktop for pizza might want to place an order for delivery online. Understanding the context of your prospect and their intent as they search is One Small Step For Advertisers; One Huge Leap For Conversion Rates. Until now, Advertisers had to clone their campaigns with custom targeting for devices, but now, with enhanced campaigns, advertisers can adjust bids based on the location of a searcher, the device used, and the time of day all within the same campaign. They can even use different ads to optimize for that specific context and intent. ThisContinue Reading »

One of the biggest obstacles you need to overcome before hiring a marketer, or for that matter making any purchase decision is figuring out how to know if something works without trying it. That’s one of the big problems with claiming you are the best in your marketing, while this might be what your customers want, and it might be true, there is no way for your customer to know that you are the best until they try your product. When it comes to hiring a marketer or other specialized skill, you have an even bigger challenge because once they start talking about something you don’t quite understand, you have no choice but to defer to their judgement and take their word it. This of course means that you need to know you can truly trust a marketer before hiring them. Every time I setup a new clients adwords or bing advertising account I am faced with a very interesting Dilemma. I know what you’re thinking, who would pay $65 per click? If only you could spy on your competitors online, you could probably outmaneuver them, and more importantly outsell their pants off. The good News is that everything that happens on the internet is easy to track and analyze. There are lots of great tools to use to see what your competitors are up to, here are the few that I can’t live without. 1. Keyword Spy – The data these guys have are well worth every penny they charge. An alternative to them would be spyfu, but Keyword Spy definitely has more data. 2. Opensiteexplorer.org – this is my favorite backlink analysis tool, and I especially like it to compare my link profile to my competitors. I actually just built a tool that pulls the data from here and creates a Search Engine, so you can query the database of your competitors links for all sorts of cool stuff, like guest posting opportunities, or vertical directories that your competitors are listed on. Lots of great uses for this tool, and I use it almost every day. Let me know if you want beta access to this tool. (should be ready this week.) 3. Google alerts – Of course IContinue Reading »

I am a marketer. My job is to assign meaning to things. I turn widgets into solutions. I don’t create products, I create perceptions. My job is to communicate value. So, why am I teaching myself programming? More importantly, how am I teaching myself programming? and most importantly, Why do I believe this is the only way to avoid becoming obsolete? Growth Hacking is a term that I always rejected. It’s a fancy word technologists use to discuss ways to use technology to stimulate massive growth. As a marketer, I have been instructing programmers to build things for me and my clients that stimulate growth a long time. I am a marketer, my job is to identify where my target market is, what their frame of mind is when they have purchase intent, and join the conversation. This means finding the right audience. finding the right media, and crafting the right message. Today, the right media for massive growth is technology platforms. These platforms have hundreds of millions of users, and enable you to build on top of their technology to engage your target audience and make it easy for them to communicate with others through you, and more importantlyContinue Reading »

I have to say, this is probably one of the most brilliant marketing tactics I have ever read about, but I have to warn you. If you have kids you buy presents for during the Holiday Season, or Worse in January, this might make you seething mad. Brilliant and Manipulative. The truth is, much of this strategy is actually quite obvious and won’t seem that fundamentally brilliant until you fully understand the psychology behind it. Speaking of psychology, I am in middle of Reading Robert Cialdini’s book, “Influence, The Psychology of Persuasion.” and like Robert, one of the things that makes me an expert on the topic is that I always fall for these tactics. I find myself reaching into my wallet when I had no plans on spending any money too many times, so I am finally glad there is a book that gives me a great glimpse into the workings of my brain, and how it is trying to break my bank. (More on this another time.) The problem is obvious, Parents spend a fortune on holiday shopping, especially on toys to quiet their nagging kids, so it’s no shocker that January is slump season for toy companies.Continue Reading »

Every once in a while I come across an optimization tactic that blows my mind. It resets my entire perspective and makes me realize there is a huge goldmine I have been entirely ignoring. This part Friday, I chanced upon one such strategy and want to apologize for holding back until now this excellent strategy. More important that this one strategy is the doorways it opens in how you think about your website and how to optimize it for more traffic. The reason I am calling this Traffic Optimization is because the strategy involves on-site optimization which is typically used for SEO, but in this case it is really Social Media Optimization. While the idea has been around for a while I’m sure, it is the first I am hearing about it. This excellent strategy was guest post Ann Smarty posted on Shimon Sandler’s blog discussing optimizing title tags with HashTags. Optimizing title tags or on site code to improve social sharing is a new concept to me, but It really opened my eyes. In fact, once you understand this tactic, you can use it to identify currently unknown and undiscovered strategies, and possibly even be used by social startup’s to takeContinue Reading »

If you are like most people, life is full of peaks and valleys of motivation and Inspiration. Most people get extremely motivated, take on a strategy for conquering the world, realize they failed to follow through perfectly, lose motivation and crash down, giving up on success. This is of course very normal. For many people, New Years is one of those times that we are easily motivated to take action in improving out lives. All it takes though is a few stumbles, and some rough winter weather to drag us back down to reality, where we easily give up. There are many great strategies for New Years resolution success, and keeping the motivation going. Personally for me, since I find when I invest in improving myself, I feel better about myself and am motivated to do good, i make it a point to every day do a few small and easy things so that I always have positive fodder to feed my motivation. If it ever gets really rough, I can always count back to July 1st 2010 and realize I quit smoking 2 and 1/2 years ago. If an accomplishment like that can’t get me back on the “TakeContinue Reading »

Most local businesses believe they are just that, LOCAL. After all, if you are a dentist, is it really practical to target patients half way across the country? The answer is a resounding, YES! It does make sense, for all sorts of reasons. The first being that you open your business up to a much larger target audience. The message it sends to prospects is that this Dentist or business is so good that people from all over the country travel to get the best of the best. After all, if you are wealthy 40 something woman, recently single, looking to add a perfect smile to your resume, bringing with it tons of new found confidence and the age defying benefits that come with high end cosmetic dentistry, wouldn’t you want the best cosmetic dentist in the country? or would you limit yourself to driving distance from your office? If your patient is spending $20,000+ on procedures, whats the cost of a flight and hotel added to that? A small price to pay for the peace of mind and benefits of using the best dentist in the world. This is probably the most overlooked advantage and opportunity businesses miss outContinue Reading »

Many of you may not know this, but I have extensive background and experience in the fundraising world. Over the years, and spanning millions of dollars in donations generated, I have learned a few important details about what drives people to donate to a specific organization over many others. The answer may just surprise you, It certainly surprised me. Before we get to probably the single most overlooked factor in driving donations, here is a story that Dan Kennedy relates about investigating his own behavior and motivations to making donations. Dan goes on to say that every morning he would grab breakfast at a local cafe and as he was paying and leaving, he always put his spare change into one of the charity boxes near the register. One day he noticed that, without even thinking about it, every single time he put money into one of the charity boxes, he always put it into the same box. So, he decided to examine all the boxes and his motivations to try to uncover why he chose the charity he did. He was as surprised as I was. Every time I look outside at billboards, flip through a newspaper or magazine any other form of mass media, I get this gut-wrenching feeling that someone’s money is being wasted on advertising that could have easily been avoided just by giving me a call, or reading this blog post. It really bothers me when I see people waste money on advertising because some pushy salesman convinced them to try something, or some business runs around copying the market leaders instead of innovating in their own way. So much money is wasted on mass media advertising that It just boggles my mind. So, what is the biggest mistake marketers and business owners make? I think Gary Halbert illustrated this point best when he asked a roomful of marketers What One Advantage Would You Want Over Your Competitors If You Owned a Burger Stand? Most people responded a better recipe. Others responded they wanted a better chef. While these sound like great advantages, they really aren’t. Being the best does not help you sell product. Why not? Because customers don’t know you are the best until after they buy, not before. So, if you are marketing a business, while you might beContinue Reading »

This post isn’t directly related to marketing, but it does involve human emotion and many of the worst character traits that drive businesses into the ground. Business should be about creating value, giving to others in exchange for compensation. When a business or TV Show fails to create value, but rather insists on taking peoples money, they will eventually crash and burn like a con or a scam. Value creation is at the root of all successful businesses, and my goal with this blog is to create value for marketers and businesses. I apologize if this post is off on a tangent, but someone needs to call the new Game Show TAKE IT ALL and HOWIE MANDEL for what they are… cruel and unusual punishment. Take It All, a new gameshow that aired tonight for the first time, hosted by Howie Mandel left me wanting to throw my Television in the garbage. Most game shows are happy, fun loving entertainment that sell us the Dream. The fantasy of winning all that money. Most revolve around luck and are tons of fun to watch. However, some game shows try their best to exploit peoples greed and truly showcase the worst mankindContinue Reading »

Suggest-Sell promotions, or upselling is something as simple as asking, “Do You Want Fries With That?” While many businesses, specifically restaurants encourage their sales staff to promote extra items like desserts to customers, most waiters/waitresses and sales reps fail to really push them effectively. This of course is a big shame, because getting customers to buy one extra item can translate into 10%-20% increase in order value… The more you make, the better off everyone is… The customer gets a better experience, the sales rep earns his keep, and the business remains profitable and healthy, etc… A great story Jeff Slutsky relates is… A restaurant that couldn’t seem to motivate his staff to suggest-sell banana cream pie desserts, even though everyone loved them. So, the owner ran a hilarious and awesome contest,“The Server who sold the most banana cream pies in one month would win one banana cream pie- To Throw In The Owner’s Face!” As I’m sure you could imagine, the restaurant increased dessert sales that month by 50%, and the residual effect was a 20% increase in dessert sales overall. Just think about the Return on Investment from this one promotion. For the cost of one wholesale bananaContinue Reading »

If you don’t know what website I am referring to yet, than you probably never heard of it before. Crazy? I know… How could a website that you never heard of possibly be the most valuable website that exists? To be honest, I don’t know if the website can really back up the claim it makes, but here is what I do know… 1. The amount of money people make from the secrets, strategies, and information unveiled on this website certainly account for Billions of Dollars a year in sales, revenues and profits. 2. These rules are fundamental truths that come from a deep understanding of consumerism, human behavior and marketing backed up by decades of experience and research resulting in billions of dollars in revenues. If you think that Dale Carnegie was a wise man, consider this ancient Chinese proverb that Mr. Carnegie discussed in his book. Such an important piece of advice, it is worth repeating… “A Man Without A Smiling Face Must Not Open A Shop!” -Chinese Proverb Carnegie continues, “Your smile is a messenger of your good will. Your smile brightens the lives of all who see it. To someone who has seen a dozen people frown, scowl, or turn their faces away, your smile is like the sun breaking through the clouds. Especially when someone is under pressure from his bosses, his customers, his teachers or parents or children, a smile can help him realize that all is not hopeless- that there is joy in the world. If A Picture Says a Thousand Words, A Smile Says The Nicest Thousand Words In The Universe. Writing Killer ads is a rare skill that few bother to fully master. These legends can probably take credit for selling more product and creating more wealth than anyone else in the world. Folks like David Ogilvy are worth studying at length, and if you consider how much effort they put into choosing their words, and put in one tenth of that effort into studying what they say, A whole new world will open up to you. While I might not in their category…yet…I will kick it off with my top advertising maxim. “Before You Write An Ad or Make a Sales Call, Walk A Mile In Your Customers Shoes. Nothing Will Get You Further With Them Than Having A Conversation With The Voices In Their Head.” -David Melamed My personal favorites are Number 6 and Number 8… Which one do you like the best? 1. “On the average, five times as many people read the headlines as read the body copy.” -David Ogilvy 2. “It follows that unless your headline sells your product, you have wasted 90 percent of your money…” -David Ogilvy 3. “I’ve learned that any fool can write a bad ad, but that it takes aContinue Reading »

My first wedding anniversary was a great lesson in gift giving. I racked my brain for ideas of a great gift to commemorate what I still consider to be the greatest event of my life. I ran some Google searches and discovered that a clock is somehow a symbolic gift for first anniversaries. So, I took a train from work to Macy’s and picked out a nice watch for my wife. The great thing about first anniversaries is that you have the rest of your life to learn from your early mistakes, and this gift while very much appreciated failed to show any real thought. How did I know, because I saw my wifes gift and it had personal love and care written all over it. My gift came from a google search and wasn’t personal at all. It’s the thought that counts when giving gifts, and that gift was for all practical purposes thoughtless. Not to say I didn’t put thought into an idea, but that I was thinking about the wrong things. Like Conrad Hilton discusses in his biography about how his mother cherished his gift to her, but never wore it. It was the thought she cherished,Continue Reading »

There are lots of excellent marketing books out there, some are even must reads, like Claude Hopkins, “Scientific Advertising, or David Ogilvy’s, “Confessions of an Ad Man.” I would be remiss if I didn’t recommend Al Ries and Jack Trout’s game changing book, “Positioning,” and I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t recommend reading Dan Kennedy’s Books, specifically, “The Ultimate Marketing Plan,” and “The Ultimate Sales Letter.” However, while there are probably hundreds of other books I would highly recommend, there is only ONE BIBLE that every marketer on the planet should read, and if they were really smart, they would read it at least once a year, if not more often. To be honest though, I haven’t read this book in over a decade, although I did read it about 5 times prior to the last ten years. I recently picked up the book, and I can assure you that not only is a refresher course a good idea, but I am discovering new insights from this book now that I have ten more years of experiences to filter the knowledge through. This is in fact the main reason I am such a strong advocate forContinue Reading »

Last night I went to Best Buy at 1:00am to try to get a new laptop and maybe grab one of their Door Busterin TV deals. When I saw the line to pay, I bounced and went home. Why would I shlepp out to a store at one in the morning, and than just leave empty handed…by choice?! Simply put, I was missing the driving motivators that power the Black Friday Rush. Obviously, there were hundreds of other people who were driven by those needs, as shown by their commitment to stand in those lines. In fact, some of them probably waited for half a day waiting to grab a deal. Where did Best Buy go wrong? I am in the market for a laptop. I left the house and went to the store at 1am, spent time messing around with different laptops, chatted up sales reps, yet some how, they failed to close the deal… Joe Apfelbaum from Ajax Union sent out an email today where we wondered by people spend so much time on Black Friday trying to save a few dollars, when they could spend that time working a little harder and earn more than enough moneyContinue Reading »

The year was 1858, the Date was November 22nd, and there was joy in the air. The Gold Rush was in high gear, and everyone was out prospecting. On this particular day, General William Larimer, a land speculator from eastern Kansas, placed cottonwood logs to stake a claim on the bluff overlooking the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek, across the creek from the existing mining settlement of Auraria, and on the site of the existing townsite of St. Charles. Larimer named the town site Denver City to curry favor with Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver. Perhaps the greatest day in American History, A day you and I should be thankful for every single day. That’s Right, 154 years ago today, The Great City, and My Beloved Birthplace, Denver Colorado came to be. Being topical is one of the great strategies that most businesses fail to maximize on. The glamor of number one rankings in Google literally pays my bills. I built my career in search marketing selling SEO and scaling PPC for clients and have the pitch down pat. I have a rule about marketing that states, “Business Owners and Marketing Directors are not in business to make money. They are in business to feel good about themselves, money is just a means to an end. So when selling advertising or marketing services, sure, make them money, but make them LOOK GOOD MAKING MONEY, and they will literally throw all their money at you.” This might seem counter-intuitive, after all whats the point of marketing if it doesn’t rake in the dough. My answer is simple. There is No Point… But Making Money is not enough. The average business can market their products in 10-20 different media, but few market themselves in more than 3, the savvy ones use 5. How many different ways and places do you market your business? How do businesses choose how and where to market themselves? Usually its where their competitors are marketing. They want to compete, They wan to Win. They attach so much value to their image, and let theContinue Reading »

Twitter announced they are giving away $1,000,000 in advertising credits this holiday season in the form of $100 credits to the first 10,000 businesses to sign up. Claim Your Credit Here. The requirements are the following. Is your business based in the U.S? Do you Tweet regularly? Do you have a fully filled out bio and profile picture? Do you have 20 or more followers? Are you a new advertiser? While Twitter claims this is only for 10,000 businesses, even if you miss out, I can’t imagine them not using this email list to offer credits to try out their advertising in the future. After all, they have been offering these credits to marketers privately, and considering people spend over $800 Million a year on promoted profiles and promoted tweets, I would assume that hey know how much they can spend to find new advertisers, and probably know that this promotion is profitable. So, sign up regardless if twitter is a place you want to explore advertising. Probably the biggest fib created in the Business world is the belief that, “You Need To Pay Your Dues and Work Your Way Up From The Bottom To Get To The Top.” Just in case President Obama isn’t proof enough for you, let’s start off examining the root of this limiting perception. First, the people who tell you to work your way up from the bottom often have a vested interest in staying on top of you. The old guard is quite frankly your competition, and the only reason they would tell you to work your way up is that they want to keep you down. They are your competition. Further, many of them took the long hard route of working their way up, paying their dues, and resent those that work smarter and move quickly to the top. Probably one of the hardest lessons I learned is that when I seek out approval and recognition from the people I perceive to lead my industry, I hardly get noticed. When I humbly go about my business, working my magic, somehow the people I tried to get to notice me in the past suddenly notice me. While there are probably deeperContinue Reading »

Business is personal. Not in the sense you think. I mean, You Need To Make Business Decisions that are in your Personal Interests, Because Everyone Is Is Making Decisions That is In Their Personal Interest. When it comes to your needs versus your adversaries needs, they will always choose their needs first. The sooner you accept that EVERYONE is looking out for their own self-interest, the sooner you can overcome probably the biggest repellent of wealth, “GUILT.” Recognizing that no matter who you are dealing with, no matter how honest, trustworthy, and sincerely they care about you, when it comes down to your money/needs versus their money/needs, you will come in second place. As you will see throughout this blog, I am a big fan of Robert Ringer. Robert postulates that there are essentially three types of people you will interact with in business. The first type openly admits they are looking out for their self interest, and will try to take every advantage from you they can. This is possibly the best kind of person to deal with in business because you know exactly what you are up against. There are no surprises. Mark Cuban, when asked by TonyContinue Reading »

” The Results A Person Obtains Are Inversely Proportionate To The Degree To Which He Is Intimidated.” – Robert Ringer in Winning Through Intimidation Robert Ringer in His landmark book Winning Through Intimidation has opened my eyes to a reality that while difficult to face, must be acknowledged and respected due to it’s clear and obvious truthfulness. He explains, ” It was in the deals in which I had been intimidated that I had taken the greatest financial beatings; and it was in the situations in which I had been intimidated the least that I had made out the best.” It is clear from this theory, that when selling or negotiating you need to lay out a specific plan to keep from being intimidated. You have to find a way to trade places with the principal; From now on you have to be the intimidator and find a way to maneuver the principal into the role of the intimidatee. This philosophy laid the ground work for another Ringer Theorem. Posture Theory – “This Theory States That It’s Not What You Say Or Do That Counts, But What Your Posture Is When You Say Or Do it.” In real estate salesContinue Reading »

You and I, we live to connect. We pursue connecting with others constantly. Business is essentially a series of processes and relationships that working together create value. In fact, as a business, you cannot create value without a customer. You can create the potential, but without relationships, you haven’t actually created any value. I would argue that most people live their lives to Connect, Create, and Achieve. This is the deeper workings of the pursuit of happiness. Marketing, is primarily about communicating value, but it’s really about nurturing relationships. There is a common truism in the marketing world called the Law of Reciprocity which states, “When You Give To Others, They Feel A Deep Rooted Need to Give Back To You.” This law is not only at work all the time if you just look around, but it works in reverse too. So many people do things for others with the single intention of motivating that other person to reciprocate. No matter how far fetched it seems. In SEO, we see this with linking to other websites or commenting on them. While we do this to provide value to our audience, we also buy into the fantasy that they mightContinue Reading »

Advertising on billboards can be very effective but many times it is too cost prohibitive. Many people wonder if some forms of advertising are dying like newspapers and billboards, yet they still account for the bulk of media spend in the world. The thing you have to master is buying media at the right price. Before I start explaining this simple trick to get billboards for super cheap, I just want to cover the ethical side of the fence. While this strategy involves no deception or dishonesty, it requires recognizing that when it comes to buying media, it’s you against them. They have a fiscal responsibility to charge you as much as possible, and often are commission earning salesmen, who will do whatever they can to get you to commit to as long of a commitment as possible spending as much money as possible. Media Salesmen are amongst the savviest out there, and most of the time, the amount they charge is never fixed and never based on their hard cost to deliver your ads. In fact, printing a new page in a newspaper that is already going to print costs almost nothing. Definitely not the thousands of dollars they wouldContinue Reading »

Tonight’s episode of Raising Hope featured a brilliant real estate broker marketing himself as, “Brad With The Hat. Probably the most common reason I hear from clients about why they couldn’t close a sale or why they can’t convert all of their leads, prospects or visitors is that their price wasn’t low enough. Especially in the Ecommerce world, everyone talks about how their is no customer loyalty, just price loyalty, and they hear from prospects who they can’t close that they want to see other options, compare prices, and than decide on the best price. The Truth Is…If You Lose A Customer on Price, You Lost Them Long Beforehand. More importantly, even if you did lose a customer on price, this is a good thing, which you will understand as you read the rest of this post. Even More Important than that, is if Win customers because you had the best or lowest price, they are losing out and so are you. Here’s why… Let’s get one thing straight…Lowest Price Does Not Mean BEST VALUE. Most Customers Want To FEEL like they got a great deal. They want to feel like they got the best of you, and a better deal than anyone else. Everyone Wants The Best Value Proposition, but there are all sorts of ways to createContinue Reading »

If you are responsible for a website, do SEO, or anything related to internet marketing, and you are living in 2012 or even 2010, you probably already know that usability, conversion rates and bounce rates are extremely important factors in SEO. In fact, if you are even outdated 5 years or so, you should know by now that EVERYTHING your visitors SEE and DO on your Website, or About Your Website Can Affect Your Search Rankings. What this means is simple. SEO is a holistic game that requires a deep understanding of Design, Development, Creativity, UI/UX, Social Media, Blogger Outreach, authentic communication. All in All, Just like Search Engines are a layer on the real world, a user intent engine that offers a looking glass into the entire universe, The SEO process and the SEO consultant or vendor needs to be the jack of all trades ninja who knows their way around marketing, psychology, technology, browsers, web design, web development, content creation, content syndication, PR, and most importantly Customer Relationship Management. This goes beyond just outbound interactions, but also understanding the implied promises your inbound marketing efforts convey, and giving users Exactly What They Want, Exactly When They Want It,Continue Reading »

You know how many times I walked into a store, filled my cart with things I wanted to buy, and than just walked away? You know how shopping carts I’ve abandoned online? Probably 7 out of 10 times that I am in need of something and even plan on buying it, I end up abandoning a shopping cart on atleast one website. Probably the most common shopping cart abandoning I do is on domain registrars. I check to see if a domain is available, I add it to my cart, but than I just bounce and move on.This lesson is just as applicable to a retail store as it is to an ecommerce website and even a service business. While every case, person and situation might have a unique manifestation, probably the most rampant problem that exists is the ability to PROCRASTINATE. I have literally clicked on the checkout page of a website, wanted to buy something, and was to pull my wallet out of my pocket. In fact, probably 70% of my paypal purchases I make are because I only need to login to paypal. Same goes for Amazon One Click shopping. I almost never abandon a cart onContinue Reading »

There is a hilarious Snippet in a Search Results Page on DuckDuckGo from the Wikipedia page that states “The theory of Gravity is a Hoax…” I don’t know where DuckDuckGo pulls their snippet from, but if they are like most search engines, it either comes from the pages meta description, the Open Directory Listing, or from content from the page. For those who are unfamiliar, the snippet is the content in black below the links to the site, which is usually the Page Title, although it depends on the query, etc… There are a lot of ways to track and measure your SEO efforts. Odds are, you probably use Google Webmaster Tools Search Query Report to regularly check on your impressions and clicks in Search Results, and your average position to see how you are ranking for which keywords. Odds are, you optimize around improving your rankings and watching your impressions grow first and clicks grow second. Maybe you go deeper and see how your CTR looks in various positions. There is an excellent post today on SEOmoz.org from YOAST, a noteworthy SEO who has a bunch of wordpress SEO plugins, etc.. His post talks about how SEO folksContinue Reading »

If you aren’t thinking about how to find and engage customers on mobile devices and tablets yet, time is running out. This morning I saw a discussion about a Microsoft Memo from 1993 predicting… “The power of having the worlds information – and people – on line at any time is too compelling to resist.” The author of this memo, Microsoft;s CTO, Nathan P. Myhrvold, predicted that while desktops will stick around for a long time, eventually mobile and tablet devices will dominate, and the winner of that game will be the people who own the software standards for the Information Highway devices. This was over 19 years ago. So, I guess it begs the question why android controls 52% of the mobile operating system market, and apple is a close second…with Microsoft and others all but ignored. There is a very important lesson here about evolution, branding, and how massive brands let their ego lead them to oblivion (i.e. Kodak). I learned most of what I know about branding from Al and Laura Ries and will probably cite them often on my blog. They have studied thousands of brands that both succeeded, continue to succeed and failed, and haveContinue Reading »

Every once in a while we come up with a simple solution to an aggravating annoyance in our lives, and than wonder if it’s a good enough idea to make money from it. There is an interesting discussing on Hacker News about a “Thing” a blogger built for himself and was wondering how to market it. The blogger wrote about his problem and the solution here. Problem: He lived in an apartment complex that had a gate that you could open with either a Key Card, or by dialing a number from a local area code to let in your friends or the pizza delivery guy when you are up stairs. Unfortunately for this fellow, he was an import from another town and didn’t have a local area code. So, for about a year, we used a bundled triple play plan with a local phone number just to be able to let people into his gated building, but eventually got fed up with the waste. So, he decided to write a simple software program to solve his problem. Using what I assume was the Twilio API, he built an app. Here are his own words… “So I did what IContinue Reading »

A friend of mine was launching a new product and thought he had the perfect name possible. It was short, memorable, had a funky spelling, and seemed to imply exactly what his company does. Seemed like a perfect name to him, so much so that he fell in love with it. When he tried to register the Domain Name, it was taken, and the owner said he would only sell it for $80,000. Now, this domain name had some branding value outside of my friends startup and if he wasn’t bootstrapping, I would recommend spending up to $2k for the name… But, $80k seemed outrageous. He asked for my advice, which to me was very obvious. Choose Another Name. He was too in love with his own creativity coming up with the name that he refused, and went on to trademark the name, and under the advice of his attorney was told he can take the domain away from the owner with WIPO arbitration for trademark violation. While I am not a trademark attorney, i have been around the domainer block for quite a while and am pretty positive that since the domain has some generic connotations, and since itContinue Reading »

SEO and PPC are hardly glamorous careers. In fact, outside of the white hat SEO community, it’s quite lonely. Few people understand what you do, many have been taken advantage of snake oil salesmen selling services pretending it is SEO or PPC, or just plain jane taken you and your money for a ride. Talking to friends and family about it is hardly an option since it is highly technical, and so dynamic that there is always something new to talk about, but no one to share it with. Luckily, the SEO community is one of the most amazing and supportive communities online that more than compensates for it. In fact, quite frankly, the SEO WORLD is Awesome, full of awesome people and I couldn’t be prouder to be a member. The truth is, few decisions in my life weren’t deliberate. Chasing a career in SEO was not just deliberate, but involved a significant sacrifice and effort just to get my foot in the door. I guess when I want something, I make sure to get it. During Hurricane Sandy, Reddit sent my blog over 1000 visitors. The few who posted comments on Reddit were aggressively critical, and vulgar. The main point was that it was cruel and selfish of me to “make” a guy deliver sushi to me during Hurricane Sandy. My post was actually more about praising this delivery guy, and not focused on my ordering sushi. Regardless, it begged the question, was it a good thing that I supported the economy by enabling someone who was working until the last safe second to work, or was it cruel and selfish of me to make him shlepp out in the rain and wind. Does this make me a bad person, or a good person. I can see defensible positions for both. Personally, we know where I stand, as I did indeed order sushi, and I certainly felt no guilt for enabling someone who made the choice to work until the last possible moment to meet my market demand with his supply. While nothing in life is that black and white, and every individual has their own filter and perspective of how they view the world and is entitled to their freedom of expression, there isContinue Reading »

Watching the news during this crazy storm, said to be the worst ever recorded to hit the eastern seaboard, it amazes me seeing crazy folks outside dancing in the rain. One guy said on the news, “It’s Only Water, Whats The Big Deal.” Now that local deaths have been reported, and cell phones are getting text messages from the NY OEM, a car stuck floating down the Schrewsbury River, and Governor Chris Christie Bashing Mayors for encouraging Atlantic City residents to stay home instead of evacuate, a fire in Teaneck, a tree killing someone in their own home, and still crazy kids outside with boogie boards, checking out nature, and just waving to the camera while first responders react to a building collapsed in Chelsea neighborhood…You would think common sense would kick in eventually, and people would start paying attention and staying safe… The truth is, this is nothing new. In fact, this is such a strong emotion. The need to establish autonomy, the need to HAVE WHAT YOU CAN’T is so strong, the smarter marketers use it to raise prices and get clients chasing after them. As a Coloradan exiled to the tri-state area, and having spent the better part of the last Seven years in New York, and while I am currently evacuated to Brooklyn for the duration of the Hurricane, I decided to try to test the limits of the City that never sleeps. Sure enough, on my first try no less, a Sushi joint (Sushi K Bar) four avenues and fourteen blocks away from me, was not only open, and not only super busy today, but they delivered sushi right to my door in a FREAKIN HURRICANE. While I know it’s in style for us small town folks to rag on the big apple, complain about the traffic, the suicidal traffic-dodging pedestrians, and the ear busting noise, oh how I really hate the noise… trucks idling on residential blocks, bus mufflers that can shatter windows, and millions of people buzzing about minding their own business, and of course no one elses… I have to admit it is quite refreshing to be able to pick up the phone, and get sushi delivered in a Hurricane. Have You ever wondered why journalists stay behind reporting on hurricanes and storms while everyone else is evacuating out of harms way? I evacuated my Jersey Shore residence three blocks from the beach to stay safe, and I am basically glued to the TV watching the news, both for updates about where I am in Brooklyn, as well as what’s going on in Deal New Jersey where I live and run my marketing business out of. There are television journalists reporting locally, and I recall even during Irene there were reporters being blown around in the storm, yet working their jobs bringing us the news we want to follow. Maybe I am cynical, but It makes me wonder if TV Journalists have slavemasters as bosses, and they hate when school is out, because that means work is in. New Media Outlets are just pandering to an audience and it’s all about the advertising dollars they bring in. They serve a crucially important function in society of both easing our boredom, and enlightening us to wonderful new products we wonder how we ever lived without. We have hurricane Sandy threatening the entire eastern seaboard, and terrifying news media promoting it as Frankenstorm or Monster Mash, the combination of a northern cold front, full moon high tide, and a storm that claimed 43 lives already. I was in Costco on friday and they must have sold millions of flashlights, batteries and water. I decided to try to hunt down a battery powered radio, but guess what… no one seems to have them… Which is bizarre, because even airlines are promoting all fees waived deals, and escape the storm low ticket fares. My mother helping them out encouraging me and my wife to headtail on a red-eye to beautiful Denver. Yet, no one seems to sell battery powered radios any more. What is even more surprising is that the front page of the newspaper and all newsmedia seemed to tell everyone to have a 3 day supply of water, canned food, flashlights, batteries and A Battery Powered Radio. I get this question all the time from clients ,friends and colleagues, ” I have very limited budgets, what is the best way to advertise my business?” People asking this question of course know deep down inside that there is not perfect fit solution to market their business, and there is not best way or place to find customers through marketing or advertising. The word best is obviously very relative, and every situation is different. In truth it’s not rocket science, as I will outline below a very simple 3 step formula to test any and all marketing plans against to see if it is likely to work. I usually just humor these questions with my simple answer that your customers are your best media, and focus your efforts of delivering an exceptional experience to your customers, one that they can’t stop talking about… but, the truth is obviously much more complex than that. My Wife hired an exterminator today to get rid of some scary bugs hanging around our garage. She found him by calling a neighborhood friend to ask for a recommendation. She could have just as easily called Terminix, or one of the other big brands, or simply ran a local search in google to find a good exterminator… But, her go to reaction was to start by asking friends for recommendations .This exterminator did a handful of things that were quite smart, and I always enjoy watching a small local business owner really taking initiative and capitalizing on the biggest asset he has, “Happy Customers.” For starters, he gave us a discount because the person who referred us, refers lots of clients to him. This of course made us feel grateful for the recommendation, and much more likely to recommend him to our friends because he demonstrated that he will not only treat our referrals with respect, but will give them benefits and discounts, which will of course paint us in a good light. He than went on to ask us if he can put a magnet on our fridge, which we of course agreed to because we might needContinue Reading »

After watching the presidential debate last night, while watching one of the commentators discuss post debate polling and if it really matters, he mentioned that when you ask the people during election season whether they like or dislike negative ads, almost all say they hate them. Here is the real question. Do americans really care about the economy or do they care about who they feel can relate to them and their needs best? CNN did polling post the debate of 33 republicans and 33 democrats that are undecided and asked them a series of questions regarding the debate, the election in general, and who they like better, and who can fix the economy, etc… Almost 20% more people on every single question about the economy said Romney understands jobs, the economy and how to fix it much better than Obama. Test, Test, Test… That’s all every marketer ever says and hears. Test Everything. The thing is, aside from the simple reality that most people don’t run true scientific tests, and most use the little data they gather as anecdotal evidence to support whatever position they are trying to back up. The Real Truth is that most people don’t want to hear or see the truth. They are afraid it will be too frightening to face. So, I really wonder, is testing really the best way or the only way to arrive at the truth, or more importantly, is it even an accurate reflection of reality? After all, correlation is hardly causation. Once you get in the murky waters of Search Engine Marketing, like SEO or PPC, where there are literally thousands or perhaps milliosn of variables that can play a role in results, and you can hardly get a true control number to test against, I still wonder if attribution modeling just hasn’t caught up to the cause and effects that are steps removed from the original action. I’ve been doing SEO for around 7 years now and probably the single biggest disconnect between my clients and myself revolves around using Rankings versus Traffic/Conversions/Sales/Revenue as a metric to measure my success. Here’s the thing, When I look at a Search Query Report in Google Webmaster tools, Google Actually reports to me how many impressions, clicks, and my Click Through Rates I get down to the ranking position on the page. What’s most significant about this report is that every single keyword shows rankings fluctuating between multiple positions and pages. Yet, my Traffic Data, My Conversion Data, and Sales and Revenue Data is undisputed FACT about the value of the SEO results I deliver to clients. For example, on one site I do SEO for, I generate roughly $100,000 profit a month from organic search traffic. When I took over the site, it was generating under $20,000 a month in profit. The site draws in Search Traffic from over 7,000 pages, and over 1200 different keywords reported in Google Webmaster Tools. Probably the biggest lesson I learned from the book is that Marketers could learn more about driving sales from self help books than from marketing books. Here’s why. For starters, as human beings driven by human nature, we are more similar than we are different from our customers. Self Help is about hacking our behavior to overcome our self defeating behaviors to bring about change in our lives. “What Could Possibly Be More Telling About What Someone Wants, and How to Get Them to Take Action, (Like Buying) Than the Information They Seek Out By Themselves to Take Action and Motive Themselves to Improve Their Lives?!” The Great Thing About W. When I asked Eric Ries why it took technologists over 100 years to discover what direct response marketers figured out in the 1800′s, he responded, “Because Technologists are stubborn.” If you ever wondered who invented coupons and why, it’s no secret. Claude Hopkins was a door to door salesman who wanted to TRACK whether which of his offers worked best. So, he decided to offer a unique offer to a set amount of homes, and compare the results. Gaining an Unfair Advantage over your competitors might be a hard pill to swallow, but regardless of how you feel about it, there is no question that not only do you need to protect yourself from being vulnerable to your competitors eating your lunch, you also have to be prepared to take advantage of opportunities that fall in your lap. One such example we discussed in an earlier post where a pizza shop ran a promotion that offered buy one get one free if you ripped out their competitors ad from the yellow pages, and brought it into their store. Another great example I read about was a local business put up a Huge Blue balloon that could be seen from miles away to promote an event they were hosting and spent a hefty sum promoting with the message, ” Just look for the Big Blue Balloon.” This savvy competitor from a few blocks away put up a MUCH BIGGER blue balloon at his location. Guess who got tons of business piggybacking off their competitors marketing strategies? Personally, I would recommend before ever doing a strong marketing push or media buy to think about how it will affect competitors. IContinue Reading »

“Sometimes It Just Boils Down to Emotions!” – Barter Kings I would argue, It always Boils down to Emotions!” Barter Kings, A new A&E reality show I accidentally stumbled upon, which premiered tonight, exposes the brutal truth about marketing and sales. The show is about folks who find a product available to trade that they really want, usually worth close to $8000, that they get by trading up multiple products over the course of a couple of days for increasing value. They start by finding out what the owners of the product they want really wants, and than take a product worth about $100, find someone who desperately wants that item and is willing to trade it for something worth around $500. They than trade that $500 item for something worth $1200, etc… until they can trade up to the product the original owner wants for their product. This one guy wanted a horse for his daughters birthday worth around $8000, the owner wanted a 4 horse trailer worth around $5000, the Barter King started with an item worth around $100 and four trades later, he heard his daughter say, “I will remember this day for the rest of myContinue Reading »

Starting a blog has been on my to do list for way too long. Every time I got close to starting one, I managed to find a dozens reasons to talk myself out of it. I simply pushed it off until one day I decided to reach out to Barry Schwartz, probably the most respected blogger in the Search Engine industry and founder of Rusty Brick, the one development firm I always recommend to others. I’ve always had the deepest respect for Barry, and feel honored that I was able to pick his brain about the single most important advice he has for a new blogger. His advice might shock you, and I will get to it in a minute, but first some general blogging advice he shared with me. One of my biggest concerns was the overlap of my interests within the marketing and technology world, and how to label, tag and categorize my content, so I asked Barry how he managed to categorize his content properly on Search Engine Roundtable. Barry Responded, ” When you start, it will be all over the place. About 3-6 months in, you are going to need to revamp your category structure. IContinue Reading »

An inspiring tale of a small neighborhood pizza place that took on The goliath brand Domino’s and their gigantic ad in the Yellow Pages that was sucking their customer base dry. Let’s be honest, every customer we find, every sale we make, and every dollar we earn is taking bread off someone’s table. Money Moves, that is it’s nature. It is not a Zero-Sum Game, that dollar you earn is not lost, it is well earned and exchanged for real value. That is what your pricing represents (or should represent) a numeric representation of the value your provide and exchange for it. Your competitors know this better than anyone, and part of your job is to stay a step ahead of them. There are many ways to win customers, and steal customers from your competitors, some more ethical than others, but ultimately, if your customer has a need, and they don’t give you their money to solve it, they will go to someone else to meet their needs, solve their pain points, and deliver their dreams. The story starts off like many others and credit goes to Jeff Slutzky in his book he co-authored with Dan Kennedy for sharing itContinue Reading »

While I certainly have faith in my marketing abilities, background, and knowledge, there are a couple of small lessons that have guided me my entire life that I would like to leave this post off with. 1. No Matter How Much I Know, or Think I know. I know NOTHING. The world, and human nature is way beyond my comprehension. Way beyond my ability to fully understand. Which leads to rule number two. 2.”Who Is the Wise Man? He Who Learns From Everyone!” – Ethics of Our Fathers. So, while I may not have had one mentor. You, and the rest of the world are my mentor, and will always continue to shed light on the mysteries of the world and marketing and give me more and more insight into where it hurts, and how to make your pain go away. (I believe marketing is about healing. It is about communicating a cure that successfully solves problems and removes pain from your life.) I make this one promise as I embark on this blog and chronicle my experiences as a lifelong student always learning, that no matter who you are, and what your credentials or background. I WILL ALWAYS LISTENContinue Reading »

In a previous life, I was a commercial real estate mortgage broker. My job was to make 150 cold calls a day to real estate owners, insisting that my bosses brokerage can actually get them cheaper rates and save them money. The company I worked for broke off of a major player in the space, and insisted this is the way to make millions in commercial mortgages. It is a numbers game. Call enough people and you will find customers, close deals, and make money. The system worked. It worked for them, and it worked for me. I actually closed a few deals, and learned a ton along the way. What I really learned was that the deals I ended up generating were the difficult ones to close that required creativity. This experience educated me to a degree that I wanted to stay in the real estate industry forever. I was always committed to learning and understanding more and more and trying to find the next shortcut or angle that wasn’t saturated by the overly saturated market already. I was only 18 years old, and I actually believed my bosses that playing the “numbers” game was the way the winContinue Reading »

Ever since I was a little kid, I just loved marketing. The challenge I had was that I was born in a sheltered environment where my parents did not own a TV. I was surrounded by books and had minimal exposure to a newspaper. If I wanted to watch TV,(which I did) I had to make up an excuse to go to my Grandmothers house. Now that I think about it, most parents have a TV to be the babysitter. My parents didn’t have a TV to turn my Grandmother into a Babysitter. Genius. I still remember watching Tom and Jerry at my Grandmothers House, and my father walked in and turned off the TV, because he felt it taught violent behavior (If only he knew about the “Itchy and Scratchy Show?!”) I remember watching a commercial where a parent tricked their kid into going to the dentist and my father insisted that watching parents lie to their kids on TV would turn me into a liar. I’m not gonna claim I never told a lie, although I certainly never chopped down a cherry tree, but there was certainly some truth to that. You and I are influenced by ourContinue Reading »

I got my first taste of marketing when I was 5 years old and really wanted a dollar after watching the little rascals sing, “we got a dollar, we got a dollar, we got a dollar hey hey, hey hey.” So, I looked around the room for something to sell, something I could use to get the wonderful dollar that seemed to excite other kids my age so much. I bought into the dream from the Little Rascals, and I just needed a Dollar. The problem was… All I had was a used pencil. At that age, Pencils were basically a commodity. I was stuck. How was I gonna get that dollar with just a Pencil, just a used pencil that seemed to be so abundant my parents always managed to find one when I had homework to do, which was basically all the time. (Short of a Transmorgiphier and a pet tiger, my only shot was to get creative. I looked around the room for some inspiration and thats when it hit me. I saw my reflection in the mirror and realized I had the cutest smile in the world. After all, I was an adorable five year oldContinue Reading »
